Success Doesn’t Happen By Chance
We have attempted to provide you with an overview of performance improvement decisions and implementation based on Leigh and Watkin’s Handbook of Improving Performance in the Workplace, Vol. 2: Selecting and Implementing Performance Interventions. The final areas to consider for your organization are:
- Performance Capability. Building, managing, and maintaining your capacity requires great diligence and a far-reaching vision. Outsourcing, succession planning, and visioning will all help you invest in your human capital.
- Organizational culture. Constant, and almost impossible to change, organizational culture change efforts must focus on enhancing the values you already have in common while capitalizing on the diversity your employees provide.
- Continuous monitoring. A needs assessment is often begun, then checked off and shelved. Instead, it can be a powerful tool for identifying the gaps between where you are and the objectives you have set. To employ this tool, collect and analyze reliable and valid data to make informed decisions regarding your programs and efforts.
- Significant accomplishments. Each evaluation and intervention must prove to be a value add to your organization in the bottom line. Conduct a return-on-investment analysis prior to any performance improvement or intervention program.
Success doesn’t happen by chance. With every organizational development program and evaluation there are significant decisions that must be made with care. Improving performance is a highly specialized and customized approach that can give you tremendous returns, or flop entirely. Consider carefully what results you want to accomplish, why you have not yet accomplished them, assess your available options, choose wisely, and implement faithfully for your desired results.
