Have You Assessed Your Assessments?
Personality assessments have been gaining popularity in the past decade, with one recent study finding that more than 80 percent of the companies surveyed use some type of assessment either during the hiring process or when making talent management decisions internally.
While pre-hire assessments should never be the only determining factor in your hiring decisions, they may improve fair hiring practices by standardizing the hiring process. Assessments, when properly created and validated, should treat all applicants in the same, non-subjective manner and should not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability or age.
Assessments should also be used for employee development to determine a person’s best role. Learning more and asking questions that may challenge or reveal details about a person can give insight to who a person or a team can be. Everyone is different, and that uniqueness should and can be translated into a competitive advantage with the use of these tools. Improvement, understanding, acceptance of differences, these are all things that can be gained through personality assessments. They promote better self-awareness as well as group-awareness, which leads to better business.
